Hobby that turned out to be not ‘just a hobby’: Home Chefs providing healthy food to Covid patients and their families
Throughout India, home chefs are proving to be life savers cooking and delivering food to Covid infected families. With restaurant food being expensive and not so healthy, home cooks are proving out to be a very essential, economical and healthy alternative. Here is a very small part of the Samaritan activity going throughout India:
‘Covid Meals for India’ online portal:
Founder of the online portal, Chef Saransh Goila said,
“At any given time, there are over 2 lakh users on Covid Meals for India, mainly built to resolve the issue of meal management during this time. What started as a spreadsheet has now grown into a website over 3,000 volunteers across India, with over 190 from Pune.”

Bengaluru: Some residents are providing door-to-door food service for covid patients.
Also, volunteers from Good Quest Foundation, Corona Care, Bengaluru, Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society (BREADS), Project Vision, AIFO and ECHO are providing free service in East and Central Bengaluru.
Hyderabad: Gowri Bakarju is providing food in Hyderabad directly to hospitals. She recognized that the most affected are those people who are underprivileged and most of their family members are sick.
"I got the idea of serving food to those who are underprivileged when I witnessed an incident in my family. About 11 people were affected by the virus and there were kids among them. These people were not able to cook their own food and then I thought about the people who are not privileged enough to have even one meal and so I decided to do my part. I decided to serve food to the people who are at the hospitals," she said.
Kerala: Food on Pushkart : A financier places food parcels and bananas in a pushcart near Gobichettipalayam bus stand. This is for daily-wage laborers who because of being so exposed are either sick or are not left with enough income due to Covid.
Rajasthan Police: Police has employed the homeless for preparing meals for the covid patients. This also solves the problem of unemployment and gives homeless a sense of purpose and a source of income.
Chennai: Mom-in-law and Daughter-in-law are together providing healthy food for Covid Patients. “We saw what the virus was doing to people, and we decided to start making nutritious meals for those who needed it. The meals are what we eat ourselves at home, comprising of rasam, sambar, vegetable and rice,” daughter-in-law Sahivakrupa Rajaram says.
