Lockdown reduces Rhino Poaching in South Africa

There was a decrease in the number of rhinos killed last year in South African's national parks because of the lockdown induced reduction in nationwide movements.

Kruger Park is home to world’s largest rhino population with a current population of 3,529 white rhino and 268 black rhino. There was a 33% decrease last year of rhinos killed in South Africa’s national parks. This was because of reduced movements around the country, the country’s environmental ministry said.

394 rhinoceroses were poached for their horns compared to 594 that were killed in 2019. There was also an increase in arrests of poachers due to the cooperation between law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. Conviction rate increased to a whopping 97.8% of poachers that have been prosecuted.
